What does Cinco de Mayo have to do with the Serra Club?

The answer is . . . not much! Unless, of course, the club's General Membership meeting falls on May 5, which happens in 2022! Read on for details.

The answer is, not much, unless the club’s General Membership meeting happens to fall on May 5, which happens in 2022!  Join us for Mass at Curé of Ars at 5:30 PM, during which Installation of Officer for the coming year will occur.  Then, at 6:30 PM we will share in a Cinco de Mayo fiesta – complete with fajitas and margaritas – in the Fr. Burack Room off the church narthex.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of the Mexican army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.  This was, in fact, about 100 years after our patron, St. Junipero Serra, and his Franciscan brethren established the Catholic faith across southern California.  Often mistaken for the anniversary of Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated in September, Cinco de Mayo is much more popular in the United States than in Mexico.  Apparently, the notoriety in the U.S. relates to good marketing by beer companies, as beer sales on Cinco de Mayo rival beer sales on Super Bowl Sunday.

Mark your calendars now, and join us on Thursday, May 5, 2022.  Register here: JOCO Serra General Membership Meeting by clicking on the green “Register Now” button.

Tickets are $25 for adults, a donation payable at the door, to help offset the cost of the meal.
