Seminarian Send-Off 2022

A great evening enjoyed by Seminarians, Clergy, and Serrans, beginning with the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and ending with a shared catered dinner. Read on to catch up on the 2022 installment of the annual Seminarian Send-Off!

The annual Seminarian Send-off occurred Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at Holy Spirit Church in Overland Park, KS.  Archbishop Naumann celebrated Mass for a crowd estimated at about 120 people. Sponsored by the archdiocesan Serra Clubs, the event acknowledged the gift of vocations and the responses of young men to discern God's call in their lives. Pictured at left is Archbishop Naumann, and Deacons Colm Larkin (L) and George Rhodes (R), at the start of the Mass.

In 2022, the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas is blessed with ten (10) new seminarians, joining seventeen (17) returning men, for a total of twenty-seven (27) seminarians studying in college and theological seminary settings.

New seminarians include:

  • Andrew Buyle, KSU graduate, entering the Spirituality Year at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver
  • Jacob Cofer, Baker University graduate, entering the Spirituality Year at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver
  • Jerrad Condreay, WSU graduate, entering the Spirituality Year at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver
  • Zachary McGuinness, KU graduate, entering the Spirituality Year at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver
  • Landry Weber, KSU graduate, entering the Spirituality Year at St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver
  • Keegan Colbern, home school graduate from Topeka, entering first year at Cardinal Glennon Seminary College in St. Louis
  • Jimmy Mendoza, 2021 graduate of St. James Academy, entering first year at Cardinal Glennon Seminary College in St. Louis
  • Joseph Punswick, 2022 graduate of St. James Academy, entering first year at Cardinal Glennon Seminary College in St. Louis
  • Juan Vasquez, 2022 graduate of Bishop Ward High School, entering first year at Cardinal Glennon Seminary College in St. Louis
  • Robert Rooney, attorney, entering first year pre-theology studies at Pope John XXIII Seminary, outside Boston

In his homily at Mass that evening, the Archbishop spoke of his desire, indeed the desire of every bishop, to ordain every seminarian who enters. Yet, he poignantly reminded the congregation of a more important objective: prayer for seminarians that each will know God's will and follow it.

Archbishop Naumann also identified the opportunity and the need for courageous priests and laity in the wake of the failure of the Value Them Both amendment initiative. The need for courageous, sacrificial love is now greater than ever.

During the Mass, seminarians Brian Jacobsen (left) and Benjamin Reinhardt (right) received from Archbishop Naumann the ministries of Lector and Acolyte, respectively.

After Mass, Serrans, the seminarians, and clergy present enjoyed a catered dinner in the Holy Spirit School gymnasium.

Pray for our seminarians as they begin a new academic year. May they - and we - know God's will in all things important in life.

O Father, raise up among Christians abundant and holy vocations to the priesthood, who keep the faith alive and guard the blessed memory of Your Son Jesus through the preaching of his word and the administration of the Sacraments, with which You continually renew Your faithful. Grant us holy ministers of Your altar, who are careful and fervent guardians of the Eucharist, the sacrament of the supreme gift of Christ for the redemption of the world. Call ministers of Your mercy, who, through the sacrament of Reconciliation, spread the joy of Your forgiveness. Grant, O Father, that the Church may welcome with joy the numerous inspirations of the Spirit of Your Son and, docile to His teachings, may she care for vocations to the ministerial priesthood and to the consecrated life. Sustain the Bishops, priests, and deacons, consecrated men, and women, and all the baptized in Christ, so that they may faithfully fulfill their mission at the service of the Gospel. This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary, Queen of Apostles, pray for us.
