Chili Cook Off a Great Success!

January 6, 2022 - A frigid January evening did not keep members and guests from enjoying piping hot chili as we gathered for a General Membership meeting.
Chili Cook Off a Great Success!

On a cold Feast of the Epiphany, thirty-seven club members and guests gathered for the 7th or 8th (let's call it the 8th!) annual Great Chili Cook-Off.  Chili cooks included (in no particular order):  Connie Euston, Judy Rielley, Ginny Skoch, Rosemary Weber, Jennifer Zielinski, Joane Wilkerson, Ginny Skoch, and Maggie Lents. The group enjoyed tasting and tasting . . . and tasting!  There were desserts and honey cornbread (thanks, Claudia Caton!) and all the fixin's that made for a great meeting prelude.

Chili Cook-Off winners were: Ginny Skoch, 1st Place; Connie Euston, 2nd Place, and Jennifer Zielinski, 3rd place.  Tasters voted with their pocketbooks. A total of $349 was raised, which will go to the benefit of vocations to the consecrated life.  Thanks to all the cooks for the delectable experience!

Our speakers for the evening were Diane Drouhard, Executive Director of the Olathe Pregancy Clinic, and Leah Conner, Executive Director of the Wyandotte Pregnancy Clinic.Tying their message to the stories behind the first two Joyous Mysteries of the Rosary, The Annunciation and The Visitation, the women spoke of the wonder and the challenges of working with women and families in crisis pregnancies. In our culture today, this work is as much a pioneer effort as it was 40 years ago, perhaps moreso. Yet their message was edifying, heartwarming and full of hope. The teams they lead in the work they do are warriors for life. Read about their work here.

New club members, Larry and Kathy Ryan, and Nicole Skoch (husband, Thomas, was unable to attend) were introduced.  We also enjoyed the company of guests, Mike and Jeanie Cosley, Dan Collard, and Rita McNally.  Their host was John Caton.

Thursday's meeting was the first JOCO Serra Club meeting to be available virtually, thanks also to John Caton.

Mark your calendars now for the February General Membership meeting to be held in the Gast Room at Holy Trinity Church in Lenexa, KS.  The meeting will start at 6:30 PM.  See the website calendar feed for more details and location.

Speakers for the February meeting will be Fr. Luke Doyle and Fr. Keith Chadwick, both ordained to the priesthood in 2021. They will talk about the influence of Serra and members of Serra during their formation years.
