2024 Runnin' with the Revs another success!

While this author was unable to make the Kansas City event, we did get to Runnin' with the Revs on Monday, April 15, 2024, at Hayden High School in Topeka. Another entertaining evening and a spirited, competitive basketball game made for a fun event for about 350 spectators.

The Topeka Serra Club took a first crack at overseeing the annual Runnin' with the Revs event at Hayden High School and, by every indication, the event was again a rousing success! Two teams of priests and young men from area middle/high schools (8th grade through high school seniors) faced off in a well-played contest, with the Gray Shirts (by admission, not that creative!) topping the Black Shirts (also, by admission, not that creative!) by one point, 54-53.

Priests playing for the Gray Shirts included Fr. Nick Blaha, Pastor at Blessed Sacrament/Christ the King in KCKS; Fr. Mitchel Zimmerman, Chaplain/Director at the St. Lawrence Campus Center at KU; Fr. George Rhodes, Associate Pastor at Most Pure Heart of Mary, Topeka, and Chaplain at Washburn University; Fr. Joel Haug, Pastor at Sacred Heart, Sabetha; Fr. Viet Nguyen, Pastor at St. Vincent de Paul, Onaga/St. Patrick, Corning/and St. Bede, Kelly; and Fr. Dan Morris, Vocation Director.

Fifteen young men on the Gray Shirts team hailed from St. James, Wetmore; St. Patrick, Scranton; Most Pure Heart of Mary, Topeka; Sacred Heart, Sabetha; Holy Family, Eudora; Corpus Christi, Lawrence; and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Topeka.

Priests playing for the Black Shirts included Fr. Justin Hamilton, Pastor at Immaculate Conception, Topeka; Fr. Timothy Skoch, Associate Pastor at St. Patrick, Kansas City, KS, and Chaplain at Bishop Ward High School; Fr. Quentin Schmitz, Pastor at St. Gregory the Great, Marysville; and Fr. Matt Nagle, Pastor at Mater Dei/Assumption, Topeka. Seminarian, Will Sutherland, of Topeka, also played for the Black Shirts. Sutherland is in a Pastoral Year at St. Joseph Parish in Shawnee, KS.

Fifteen young men on the Black Shirts joined from St. John the Evangelist, Lawrence; St. Matthew, Topeka; Mater Dei, Topeka; Hayden High School, Topeka; Immaculate Conception, Topeka; Christ the King, Topeka; and St. Stanislaus, Rossville.

Volunteer referees for the event were Quinn Buessing and Kambie Haverkamp.

The Runnin' with the Revs event is a Serra Club sponsored event to promote vocations and benefit seminarians.  All funds raised go to direct support of seminarians and religious in discernment in defraying expenses of discernment life.

Be sure to mark your calendars to take in the annual summer sporting event, Pitching for Priests, Friday, June 21, 2024, 7 PM, at Legends Field in Kansas City, KS.

This is the annual summer event that pits priests of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas against priests of the Diocese of Kansas City/St. Joseph, MO, in a softball matchup that's guaranteed not to disappoint!
