The annual JOCO Serra Club's "Great American Chili Cook-Off" (the name gets embellished every year . . .) was once again a hit with participants and meeting attendees. If you like chili, this is your go-to spot in January!
The 2024 edition of the Great American Chili Cook-Off happening on Thursday evening, January 4, 2024, at the Fr. Burak Room at Curé of Ars Church in Leawood. Seven chefs shared their chili creations. This year's participants included Rob Tinker, Doug Leibbrandt, Janice Arth, Sue Shain, John Weber, Michael Conran, and . . .
Competition for prizes was fierce as all chefs pulled out all the stops (or, all the chili peppers??) in whipping up their chili creations. Thanks to Glenn and Sue Shain for coordinating the drinks, the garnishes and other goodies.
Winners of this year's cook-off were (pictured left to right):
- Sue Shain, First Place
- Janice Arth, Second Place
- Doug Leibbrandt, Third Place
We note that Sue is the first repeat winner of the event, as she took home the top prize in last year's chili cook-off.
The event also serves as a fundraiser for vocations (votes are counted in cold cash!), with a total of $500.00 contributed for the support of vocations in the archdiocese.
Thanks to all who participated and all who attended the January General Membership Meeting of the JOCO Serra Club. Our next meeting is Thursday, February 1, 2024. The meeting will begin with Mass at 6:00 PM in the church with induction of new members, followed by a catered meal.
See you there!

While this author was unable to make the Kansas City event, we did get to Runnin' with the Revs on Monday, April 15, 2024, at Hayden High School in Topeka. Another entertaining evening and a spirited, competitive basketball game made for a fun event for about 350 spectators.

Perfectionism is an obstacle to holiness. Not exactly the goal articulated in Matthew 5:48, perfectionism clouds the understanding of the true meaning of Jesus' statement, "You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect." The key is to understand what Jesus meant when he used the word "perfect" to describe our Heavenly Father.
