In the course of a day, no matter how your day begins, it’s easy to get bogged down in details. Details of tasks to be done, details of places to go, details of people to see, details of details. Worry about details can lead to pettiness and unrest. Sometimes a simple reminder of the focus of what we do helps me to let go of the worry about details, and I rest easier. I want to share a little focus that came to me some years ago.
In the spring of 2007, Ginny and I had the good fortune to be in Kansas City (we lived in Hastings, NE, at the time) when our son, Ben, was inducted into a Jesuit honorary society at Rockhurst University. There, we heard speakers’ accolades about the group of young individuals, and in those remarks, was an included occasional word of advice.
A memorable piece of advice of that event touched my soul. It was a quote from Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., who served as the Superior General of the Jesuit Society from 1961 to1984. I will pass these words along to you, because they apply to daily life.
“Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute way.
What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.
Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.” ~Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J.
Consider each day a means of finding God and falling in love. Take a moment (or two, or three...) to be quiet and think of God. It will change everything. I know it sounds crazy, but I also know it is true. Go ahead. Waste a little time with Jesus.
If you're blessed with an opportunity to do so, find a nearby church or an adoration chapel. Go there and simply let Jesus love you. It doesn't take long.
It will change your day, not to mention your life.
