Serra Club Happenings

The Poor of Jesus Christ celebrate 12 years in Kansas City!

Arriving from Brazil to the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas on January 22, 2012, the Sisters of the Fraternity of the Poor of Jesus Christ, also known as the Poor of Jesus Christ, spend their lives committed to helping the poorest of the poor, the homeless, and those who have nowhere else to go. The Sisters celebrated their 12th anniversary on Monday, January 22, with a Mass of Thanksgiving and a community gather that followed. Check out some details and photos!

While not exactly a Serra Club event, what follows is a great story about vocation in a religious order and the call to holiness with which we were all gifted at baptism.  And, two of the sisters did speak to our club back in June 2022. So, we're close enough to report this news as a "Serra Happening!"

On Monday, 22 January, 2024, the Sisters of the Fraternity of the Poor of Jesus Christ, celebrated their 12th year anniversary in the Archdiocese of Kansas City, KS. The day was marked by a Mass, the intention of which was the legal protection of the unborn and for the gift of life, offered by Fr. Timothy Skoch, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Kansas City, KS. A celebration followed at the parish.

It's no coincidence that their first home in Kansas City was on the second floor of the former Catholic Worker House, a facility known for the last 30 years as Shalom House, which sits on 33 acres in the heart of Kansas City, KS. Since 2015, the Sisters have been at home in a convent, Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission House, next to Blessed Sacrament Church, their parish home.

The Poor of Jesus Christ have left their mark in a number of ways upon the lives of the homeless in the area. The Sisters carry out a street ministry, delivering food and clothing to people on the streets of Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri, with Tuesdays and Fridays being the days when they maintain a presence on the streets among the displaced and dependent. They manage a number of programs, including Be Sober, an effort directed at assisting Hispanics in recovery.

Here is a link to a story that was published two years ago in The Leaven, marking the celebration of the Sisters' 10th anniversary in Kansas City.

The Sisters are grateful for the support they receive from area parishes, families, and individuals. Check out their website: Home | Sisters Poor of Jesus Christ. The Sisters welcome you and your assistance in their mission!
